{"id":226,"date":"2010-08-18T12:01:05","date_gmt":"2010-08-18T04:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.a-cubed.info\/?p=226"},"modified":"2010-08-18T12:01:05","modified_gmt":"2010-08-18T04:01:05","slug":"crackberry-and-surveillance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.a-cubed.info\/?p=226","title":{"rendered":"Crackberry and Surveillance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There has been a recent spate of reports regarding <a title=\"Research In Motion's Corporate Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rim.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Research In Motion<\/a> and their difficulties with various surveillance-oriented regimes (<a title=\"CIA World Factbook on UAE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/library\/publications\/the-world-factbook\/geos\/ae.html\" target=\"_blank\">UAE<\/a>, <a title=\"CIA World Factbook on Saudi Arabia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/library\/publications\/the-world-factbook\/geos\/sa.html\" target=\"_blank\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>, <a title=\"CIA World Facctbook on Pakistan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/library\/publications\/the-world-factbook\/geos\/pk.html\" target=\"_blank\">Pakistan<\/a>) demanding access to the emails sent from the famous and popular Blackberry mobile communications system. The most recent addition to the countries <a title=\"Wall Street Journal: RIM Offered Security Fixes In India Talks, BlackBerry Maker Said It Could Share Metadata, Notes Show\" href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748703960004575427312899373090.html?mod=WSJEUROPE_hpp_sections_tech&amp;goback=.gde_1807664_member_27356710\" target=\"_blank\">demanding<\/a> such access is <a title=\"CiA World Factbook on India\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/library\/publications\/the-world-factbook\/geos\/in.html\" target=\"_blank\">India<\/a>. I find it interesting that they are targetting the Blackberry in this way. Are these the next target, or are the users of Crackberries seen as the most likely to be &#8220;misusing&#8221; (according to the governments in question) email? This attempted fragmentation and re-bordering of the internet was analysed by Goldsmith and Wu a few years ago in <a title=\"Wikipedia: Who Controls the Internet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Who_Controls_the_Internet%3F\" target=\"_blank\">Who Controls the Internet?<\/a> Will open platforms such as the Android be banned in favour of iPhones but only if Apple follows RIM&#8217;s example and limits email apps to in-country servers? What about travel to these countries?
